Blue is the New Green: Support Marine Parks Summary NSW has unique oceans, home to incredible marine life - many found nowhere else on earth. NPA, supported by various conservation groups, stakeholders and individuals, is working to achieve a world-class marine sanctuaries network for NSW. This will help ensure we can we can continue to catch a snapper, enjoy seafood for dinner and help create healthy oceans for now and long into the future. Click here Blue is the New Green: Support Marine Parks Throughout the world marine parks and fully protected marine sanctuaries have helped marine life surge back to life. Currently there are limited marine parks and sanctuaries in NSW. We need to expand this network to help ensure we can continue to catch a snapper, enjoy seafood for dinner and help ensure healthy oceans for generations to come. Marine parks are multiple use, meaning recreational and commercial fishing in the majority of the park is balanced by fully protected sanctuary zones in other areas of the park. Fishers can continue to throw a line in whilst knowing other areas of the marine park are protecting our much loved and used waters. Sanctuaries outside of marine parks help complete a network of protection for marine life right along the NSW coast. NPA has decades of experience working on marine protected areas. Whilst accomplishments with marine parks and other marine protected areas may sound impressive, a total of only 6.5% of our marine waters are fully protected as marine sanctuaries. International consensus is for a minimum 20%. Many habitats and many large stretches of coastline have been ignored for real protection. In late 2008 NPA released The Torn Blue Fringe - a landmark proposal for marine protection for NSW through a series of marine parks and sanctuaries. It shows for the first time how we can reach the internationally recommended level of protection. This proposal is based on solid science and the positive results seen for fishing, tourism and local communities in existing marine parks. It is the largest NSW marine sanctuaries proposal ever! It's an exciting new chapter in our marine conservation and one which can help produce real and long-lasting Show your support for protecting our oceans by signing our e-lobby form now. Click here |
