The NPA Solution
Beautiful Blue Sanctuaries

NPA's Torn Blue Fringe report uses the latest global to local science to investigate the best way to protect NSW's oceans. The proven solution suggested is the creation of fully protected marine sanctuary networks.

NSW does have 3 types of marine protected areas
1. marine parks
2. aquatic reserves
3. marine extensions of national land parks
however, these can give little protection, especially from the impacts of fishing.

Marine sanctuaries are fully protected waters. They are:
- zones within multiple use marine parks (typically making up about 20% of the marine park)
- aquatic reserves given sanctuary status (most are currently not sanctuary)
- or marine extensions of national parks which are fully protected (most are currently not sanctuary)

Creating Sanctuaries

Marine sanctuaries provide favourite spots for swimming, boating, diving and snorkelling whilst protecting against extractive activities.

Marine sanctuaries help boost the numbers, size and productivity of our fish, help protect our critically endangered species and provide valuable tourism and economic benefits. They build healthier, more resilient marine populations, helping provide our insurance against climate change and other threats.

NSW currently has only 6.7% of its oceans in marine sanctuaries. International scientific consensus calls for a minimum 20%. Fish nursery grounds, sites for critically endangered species and huge areas of oceans, such as those around Sydney, have been ignored for sanctuary protection.
