Campaigns Making Blue the new Green NPA's proposal was released in December 2008 within its Torn Blue Fringe report. It presents to the NSW Government, for the first time, the steps necessary to reach the internationally recommended level of protection. If implemented, it will offer world class protection for NSW waters. The proposal for more marine parks and sanctuaries for NSW is to benefit us all now and for the future. A business-as-usual approach simply won't work. The Torn Blue Fringe is a proposal based on the best available science to ensure we can continue to catch a snapper, enjoy seafood for dinner and help ensure healthy oceans for generations to come. Priorities for conservation include: Sydney Marine Park - The first marine park in the world based around a major city. Its huge diversity includes rocky reefs and sponges which are home to hundreds of species including our seahorses and snapper. There is already huge community support for protection for this much loved and used part of the coastline. Since marine parks are multiple use, all activities aside from mining can continue. Recreational and commercial fishing in the majority of the park is balanced by fully protected sanctuary zones in other areas of the park. Grey Nurse Sanctuaries - Just sixteen hotspots remain as key habitats for Grey Nurse Sharks in an attempt to help them recover their population numbers. These sharks are listed as critically endangered with only 500 left along Australia's east coast. These areas, in time, will be complemented by additional sanctuary areas along the NSW coast building a stronger network of long-term protection for our oceans.
